Whole Foods Market

United States

With a wide range of certified organic and other produce, food products, and coffee grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides, Whole Foods is making a significant contribution toward supporting the organic industry. This company has demonstrated considerable leadership in the food industry by eliminating genetically engineered ingredients from all of its private label products. Whole Foods is making efforts to address criticisms by local farmers, and has identified goals to increase local products offered in its stores. At the operational level, Whole Foods is purchasing significant amounts of renewable energy, and the company's Sarasota, Florida store was the first supermarket to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Portfolio 21 has asked Whole Foods to establish LEED certification goals for all new stores; provide detailed reporting on environmental metrics covering issues such as packaging, waste, recycling, and energy use; and improve consumer education by providing on-product labels for all its private brand offerings indicating they do not contain ingredients grown from genetically engineered seed

Biotechnology Involvement

Whole Foods supports mandatory labeling of products that contain genetically modified ingredients. Additionally, the company has removed all genetically modified ingredients in its Whole Foods brand and private label products. However, until recently Whole Foods refused to label its products as GMO-free (or some similar statement), citing legal issues and potential risks. We felt the company could show stronger leadership on this issue, and engaged in a dialogue with Whole Foods. In early 2005, after several years of dialogue, Whole Foods agreed to label its products. Regrettably, execution of this commitment has not been comprehensive and not all private label products are covered. Visit our Biotechnology Policy for more on this issue.
