VMware's virtualization software increases the energy efficiency of servers and data centers. A typical server hosts only one application to guard against failures that can cause an entire system to collapse. VMware's virtualization software allows multiple applications to run concurrently on a single machine while ensuring stability against system-wide crashes. This technology allows one server to do the work that previously required 20. Data centers consume more energy through power conversion and cooling at light system loads (less than 25% utilization) than through the direct energy consumption of the servers themselves. VMware's software increases server utilization, which decreases the energy usage of servers and cooling systems. The company is a founding member of The Green Grid, a consortium of companies recognizing that "the demand for data centers is outpacing the availability of clean, reliable power in many parts of the world."
