As a global integrated investment services firm, UBS has the opportunity to influence sustainability and environmental practices through lending, financing, and trading. The company considers environmental risk in all of its investments and risk management processes. UBS offers several "eco-performance" funds to serve environmentally responsible investors. In addition, it launched the world's first emissions index, The UBS World Emissions Index (UBS-WEMI), and the world's first biofuel index, the UBS Diapason Global Biofuel Index. The company makes considerable efforts to reduce its day-to-day environmental impact, with a special emphasis on energy use and reducing its greenhouse gas footprint. UBS continually invests in new buildings and equipment to increase energy efficiency, and has installed photovoltaic arrays at four company sites to make use of solar energy. Areas for improvement include addressing the need for sector-based policies to guide lending and financing in industries that are exposed to environmental and social risks. Portfolio 21 has asked the company to develop rigorous polices and UBS has acknowledged the need for these policies.
