Swisscom

Switzerland

Swisscom is the leading telecommunications company in Switzerland. Swisscom operates a telecommunications network, so its primary environmental impact is its energy use and associated CO2 emissions. The company has developed a strategy encompassing energy efficiency, renewable energy purchases, solar installations, and the incorporation of biofuels. Swisscom is also a service company, so its procurement policies and practices are factors in managing its environmental impact. The company exerts "eco-social pressure" on its immediate suppliers, as well as regularly assessing the ecological and social behavior of its key suppliers. Recently the company revised its environmental strategy to ensure that its activities are planned more comprehensively and assigned to the following three areas: operational ecology, green products and services, and external environmental activities. Swisscom's former CEO, Tony Reis wrote, "Swisscom views environmentally-conscious corporate management as a strategic necessity, both for the benefit of the environment and the interests of the company and all those involved with it." Portfolio 21 encourages Swisscom to provide more detailed reporting on energy use and efficiency initiatives.
