Suntech Power designs, develops and manufactures photovoltaic (solar) cells. Based in Wuxi, China, Suntech Power operates as a global solar energy company providing products for the residential, commercial, industrial, and public utility sectors. The company is working on obtaining ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system. Regrettably, Suntech doesn't explicitly discuss global warming issues, but it does cite the Kyoto Protocol as a potential growth driver and notes that environmentally friendly power generation is important and a driving force behind its strategy. The company makes monocrystalline, as well as multicrystalline, cells and modules, both of which utilize thin film technologies that have an efficiency advantage over amorphous silicon or sheet technologies. Suntech Power produces solar cells with efficiencies that are 'above average' for the technologies it uses. The environmental advantages of Suntech Power's products are clear-they create the ability to generate electricity from a renewable power source, making a contribution to a sustainable future. Areas for improvement include tracking and reporting environmental metrics associated with the company's production facilities, and playing a more vocal role regarding the risks of climate change, and the benefits of solar energy.
Human rights concern
When considering SunTech Power Holdings, a Chinese manufacturer of solar cells, we recognized the significant issues in the enforcement of labor rights and environmental regulations in China, however, we feel that the benefits the company's products provide, and the associated potential for contribution to the local population, makes the investment worthwhile.
