Reed Elsevier

United Kingdom

As a publishing company, Reed Elsevier is making significant progress in addressing its largest environmental impact, paper use, by providing more information resource services online. Although the increased use of online services poses significant energy challenges, it also provides environmental benefits associated with dematerialization, such as reductions in paper use and in energy and packaging used in the physical distribution of publications. Reed Elsevier was a founding member of PREPS (Publishers database of Responsible Environmental Paper Sourcing), which gives preference to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper and recycled paper. Another strength for Reed Elsevier is the wide range of environment related publications and resources it provides. These include New Scientist Magazine, Environmental Science educational materials and The International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control, among many others. Portfolio 21 has asked Reed Elsevier to uphold its commitments to FSC paper purchasing, to address the energy impacts of its online services, and to strengthen its environmental reporting.
