ProLogis
United States
ProLogis is the world's largest owner, manager, and developer of distribution facilities. Recognizing that climate change will significantly alter the business environment in which ProLogis operates, the company has committed to reducing energy demands as well as other environmental impacts by building all of its new distribution facilities to LEED standards in the U.S., and to comparable green building standards outside the U.S. ProLogis has been recognized for its pilot projects and research efforts in green warehouse design. The company was granted the "Logistics Environmental Technology Development Award" for its development and implementation of a warehouse construction method that reduces the amount of CO2 emissions over the life cycle of the building while reducing the size of its beams and structural columns, thereby decreasing the consumption of construction materials, waste, and the emissions associated with the transport of materials. ProLogis was the first real estate company to join the Chicago Climate Exchange; as an Associate Member, the company has a legally binding commitment that requires it to offset the carbon footprint associated with its U.S. energy use and business travel. ProLogis plans to extend this commitment to its global operations. ProLogis has been working in collaboration with its suppliers to give preference to ecologically superior products in its purchasing practices; however, the company does not have supplier guidelines in place. Portfolio 21 has asked the company to continue its collaborative efforts with its suppliers and to develop comprehensive and transparent green procurement guidelines.
