Potlatch
United States
A U.S.-based integrated forest products company, Potlatch is emerging as a leader in the domestic sustainable forestry industry. Potlatch recently achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for all its forestlands, which account for approximately 50% of the company's total fiber needs. Potlatch also recognizes "non-traditional" values in its forestlands, including business opportunities in recreation leases and conservation easements. With the company's restructuring to a real estate investment trust (REIT), Potlatch has identified some of its land holdings as having higher value uses, and is selling some of these lands to realize these gains. This raises some concerns about development and associated impacts, however, with the company's continued commitment to its forestry operations and forest management under FSC certification, Portfolio 21 will continue to hold the company and monitor its activities. Potlatch recognizes its global warming impact and focuses on the use of biofuels (forestry waste products) to reduce its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. While the company currently uses elemental-chlorine-free processes at its pulp mills (a significant improvement over former industry practices), we have asked Potlatch to move to improved chlorine-free processes. The company shows strong leadership in forest management and wood procurement, however, it does not have a spotless compliance record. Due to the energy and pollution-intensive nature of this industry, we have also asked Potlatch to focus future improvements on the reduction of air and water emissions.
Biotechnology Involvement
Potlatch is a forestry company with a strong commitment to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification of its forestlands and operations. FSC guidelines expressly prohibit the use of GMOs. Visit our Biotechnology Policy for more on this issue.
