Portland General Electric

United States

Portland General Electric (PGE) is an electric utility involved in the generation, purchase, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity to its customers in the state of Oregon. As the population in PGE's service area continues to increase, so will energy demands. PGE is preparing for increasing demand through the incorporation of demand-side management and the installation of smart meters for all its customers. Smart meters allow for two-way communication between utilities and their customers, translating requests for reduced energy demand. Additionally, some smart meters allow for reverse metering, the ability to sell or give back conserved electricity to the grid, and home automation. In 2007, Oregon lawmakers passed the Renewable Portfolio Standard that requires all utilities serving the state to include specific percentages of renewable sources in their retail load, graduating to 25% by 2025. Consequently, PGE is mandated to maintain its growth of renewable sources as a proportion of its total retail load. PGE's planned renewable generation expansion includes the Bigelow Canyon wind farm, which will provide approximately 450 MW of generating capacity by 2010. PGE recognizes that the electricity sector is responsible for a significant percentage of greenhouse gas emissions and that the company must be part of the solution; PGE has been a champion for federal and state climate change legislation. Portfolio 21 has asked PGE to improve its environmental reporting, including disclosure of its greenhouse gas emissions.
