Linde
Germany
Linde is a supplier of industrial and medical gases and related engineering services. While industrial gases can be used for a variety of purposes, there are numerous applications with environmental benefits. For example, oxygen can be used to enhance the combustion process in industry applications, which increases efficiency and reduces CO2 and contaminant emissions. As the world's largest supplier of hydrogen plants, Linde has been at the forefront of advancing hydrogen technologies for years. The company understands that hydrogen generated from fossil fuels is not a long-term solution and notes that "only sustainable hydrogen production, can in the long term, enable society to become independent of fossil fuels and limit our impact on the environment." As a result, Linde is supporting R&D efforts to explore the production of hydrogen using microalgae, as well as engaging directly in R&D for carbon sequestration technologies. Recognizing that new technological breakthroughs are not enough, the company is also pursuing how to use industrial gases to improve the environmental performance of existing production processes. For example, the use of liquid CO2 as an environmentally friendly alternative to chlorine substances for dry cleaning and other industrial bleaching processes. While Portfolio 21 is impressed with the company's ongoing efforts and commitments toward developing environmentally superior technologies and production methods, we have asked Linde to improve its environmental policy, obtain ISO 14001 certification for all of its facilities, and increase its reporting on key environmental metrics.
