Kurita Water Industries provides a range of water treatment chemicals and systems, maintenance services, and soil and groundwater remediation services. Kurita provides its clients with solutions to reduce their environmental impact and recognizes the planet's "deepening environmental crises…and that there is little time to spare." For example, Kurita's Anammox process is a new technology that removes nitrogen via a microorganism. When implemented, this technology reduced a wastewater treatment plant's power consumption by 50% and its waste generation was reduced by approximately one-third. At Kurita's own production facility, by separating solid and liquid substance from wastewater the company was able to reuse the liquid chemicals it extracted, not only reducing waste but also reducing the inputs needed in the form of new chemicals by 40%. Kurita is aware of the environmental impacts caused by the traditional chemicals used in its water treatment and is developing environmentally friendly materials and non-chemical water treatment processes that will further enable its customers to conserve energy and resources. While we commend these research and development efforts, Portfolio 21 is asking Kurita to improve disclosure on its chemical usage data and associated impacts.
