JM

Sweden

JM is a Swedish construction and real estate company leading its industry in sustainable practices. In 1992 JM began examining environmental issues and was inspired by Karl-Henrik Robert, founder of The Natural Step. Using The Natural Step as a tool for training employees, the company has made significant improvements in its environmental performance. The company's environmental key performance indicators document its continued commitment to improvement across a wide range of issues from the energy efficiency of the buildings it develops, to the direct CO2 emissions associated with its operations, to the number of preferred building products in its environmental database. JM is guided by the precautionary principle, which allows JM to reject products if there is suggestion of a negative environmental impact. For example, PVC, commonly used in walls and flooring in the building industry, has not been used in JM housing since 1999. JM sees environmental responsibility as key to the company's strategy and profitability, and believes people will want to live and work in environmentally superior buildings. Portfolio 21 would like to see JM increase its communications with the broader construction and development industry to demonstrate its environmental policies and associated successes.
