Interface Inc.
United States
As one of the first companies in the US to adopt The Natural Step principles, Interface is an outstanding role model in its efforts to radically reduce environmental impact. With a variety of environmental programs being implemented, Interface has developed the first "climate neutral" durable good (by offsetting CO2 emissions associated with the lifecycle of its floor coverings), has installed photovoltaics to provide solar power to three of its facilities, and has begun the shift from selling carpet to leasing flooring service through the "Evergreen Service Agreement." Interface is now developing carpet made from renewable natural materials that can be composted or recycled back into the same product. Recognizing the significant waste generated by carpeting, and the incredible pool of resources represented in aging carpet, Interface has developed the Cool BlueTM technology that enables the recycling of old PVC carpet components into new PVC carpet components, thereby completely eliminating the need for virgin PVC. While PVC is a substance with environmental and health concerns in the manufacturing and disposal stages, the Cool Blue technology has great potential to minimize these concerns. Portfolio 21 encourages Interface to look closely at the risks associated with this technology. Through the "Mission Zero" program, Interface aims to have zero waste and closed loop production.
