Hewlett-Packard (HP) established its Environmental Stewardship program and Design-for-Environment principles in 1992, and continues to be a leader in addressing environmental issues. Working in areas such as energy efficiency, materials reduction, waste reduction, recycled and recyclable materials, and end-of-life product recycling, the company has made considerable improvements in its products and operations, resulting in increased business competitiveness with the additional benefit of reduced environmental impact. HP currently offers over 1000 different models of energy-efficient products that meet Energy Star guidelines. An example of HP's innovation is its widespread use of "instant on fusing" technology in imaging products. This technology saves energy because the fuser heats up quickly and avoids the need to maintain power when the machine is idle, and the advancement increases energy efficiency without comprising printing speeds. HP's commitment can also be seen in its Supply Chain Social and Environmental Responsibility program. From HP's policy of auditing high risk suppliers, to developing packaging guidelines, to participating in the Clean Cargo and Green Freight Group, HP is committed to greening its supply chain, which is the largest supply chain in the information technology industry. HP's areas for improvement, which can create synergies for each other, include increasing recycled content in its products, and reducing its use of incineration as a waste disposal method.
