ERICSSON

Sweden

Ericsson is one of the world's largest providers of mobile networks and cellular phones, and has made a serious commitment to sustainable development. Ericsson utilizes design-for-environment principles and has performed life-cycle analyses on its products and services. The company has made significant product improvements, including the development of a new radio base station with reduced energy consumption. Over a four-year period, the company reduced the energy use of radio base stations by 60%, and has similarly ambitious goals for the coming years. Ericsson has also been successful at reducing materials used and waste generated by over 30%. The company complies with the European regulations restricting hazardous substances (RoHS) and is expanding this policy to all its products sold globally. While Ericsson is compliant with European e-waste legislation (WEEE), it is also in the process of rolling out its Ecology Management Provision program globally, demonstrating leadership in end-of-life management. This program offers customers a free service for product take-back, recycling, and disposal. Through the Sony Ericsson joint venture, the company has made progress toward eliminating polyvinyl chloride (PVC), with all new Sony Ericsson phones and accessories slated to be PVC-free as of 2007. Additionally, Sony Ericsson was the first in the mobile handset industry to phase out all brominated flame-retardants. Portfolio 21 congratulates Ericsson for the work it has done to date, and suggests that the company's next challenges will be to phase out these toxic materials from their entire product line.
