Echelon
United States
Echelon, an energy management company, creates products that reduce energy consumption through networking and monitoring everyday devices within utility, building, industrial, transportation, and home control systems. Echelon's products increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The company's cornerstone technology provides the underlying network for "smart meters," which allow utility companies to track a variety of details regarding energy consumption. This enables better analysis of energy use and the associated financial and environmental costs, which provides incentives for efficiency measures and facilitates more effective use of existing generation capacity. The company offers numerous examples of decreased energy use and increased efficiency through the use of its technologies. For example, the city of Oslo, Norway, cut energy use more than 60% using Echelon technology to dim streetlights in off hours, a move that also significantly reduced maintenance costs. As Echelon CEO Kenneth Oshman explains, "to steadily improve the global climate, energy efficiency is the alternative fuel already in action and within our grasp today." Areas for improvement for Echelon include instituting comprehensive environmental reporting.
