Deutsche Bank

Germany

As a global financial services company, Deutsche Bank has been working toward integrating sustainable development into its business practices for over a decade. The company has demonstrated leadership through its involvement with a variety of organizations, including the United Nations Environmental Program, the Bellagio Forum for Sustainable Development, the World Bank Prototype Carbon Fund, and the Carbon Disclosure Project. Rolf-E Breuer, a Deutsche Bank Managing Director, explains that within its internal operations "sustainability is not an abstract idea . . . it is an important element of [our] corporate policy and a significant factor driving [our] business policy decisions." In fact, the bank's credit policy states that it may not partake in the financing of any companies or projects it believes pose serious threats to the environment. With limited involvement in project finance, Deutsche Bank's primary activities center on investment management and as an advisor in financial transactions (such as facilitating and structuring services and agreements). In this role, the company advises clients on environmental issues. Portfolio 21 would like Deutsche Bank to communicate more clearly about its methods and successes in implementing its 'sustainable investing' philosophy.
