BT Group
United Kingdom
BT Group, a leading telecommunications service provider in the UK, offers local, long distance, and international phone services as well as broadband and internet services. BT has a rapidly growing business providing remote access and video conferencing technology that reduces the need for travel and the related carbon dioxide emissions. BT's most significant environmental impact is energy use. The company has already achieved significant improvements in its greenhouse gas emissions (reducing them to less than half of 1996 levels) and is set to realize further savings with real-time energy tracking technology. As one of the largest UK procurers, BT influences its suppliers to reduce the impacts associated with their products and services. The company continually looks for ways to make further improvements, and tracks the cost savings generated by its environmental initiatives. These savings have been significant; in 2006, the company saved approximately US$450 million due to its efforts. With BT's commitment to universal broadband connectivity, and the company's recognition that the largest environmental impact of internet connectivity is the energy consumed by users' computers, Portfolio 21 has asked BT to play a leadership role in demanding increased energy efficiency standards for computers and related devices. Additionally, we have asked the company to expand its reporting beyond the UK to cover its global activities.
