Bristol-Myers Squibb
United States
Bristol-Myers Squibb aims to leverage responsible environmental management into a competitive advantage by manufacturing products that minimize negative economic and environmental impacts. An emerging issue for the pharmaceutical industry is the end-of-life impact of pharmaceuticals on aquatic life. Bristol-Myers Squibb recognizes this issue and is pursuing R&D in this area, as it continues to utilize green chemistry and product life-cycle analysis in its development process. The company provides sustainability training to a wide selection of its management and employees, and engages its suppliers to reduce their environmental impact. For example, work with just five of Bristol-Myers Squibb's suppliers in Puerto Rico resulted in savings of over $8 million in annual cost avoidance and $9 million in one-time savings. The environmental benefits of these improvements included reducing water use by more than 1.5 million gallons and reducing solid waste by almost 200,000 pounds. Innovative approaches to environmental issues have been prominent at Bristol-Myers Squibb. Examples include efforts to support biodiversity and mitigate the land-use impact of its facilities by committing to purchase and preserve biologically diverse land equivalent in size to its worldwide facilities. We commend the company's willingness to respond to stakeholder concerns related to the use of PVC in packaging; however, we have asked the company to report publicly on progress and to make a commitment to the elimination of PVC.
Biotechnology Involvement
Pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb's medical application of biotechnology aims to provide healthy benefits while ensuring transparency. A committee with independent members from the local community addresses biotechnology concerns and stakeholder questions in public forums. The company has plans in place to prevent environmental releases of GM material. Visit our Biotechnology Policy for more on this issue.
