AstraZeneca researches, manufactures, and sells pharmaceuticals and biopharmaceuticals for a variety of healthcare areas including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neuroscience, and oncology. The company addresses the environmental impacts of drug design in a top down approach that includes manufacture and use. AstraZeneca has performed life cycle assessments on the most important solvents used in its manufacturing and provides the company's development chemists and engineers with a Solvent Selection Guide and an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient Removal Technology Selection tool that promote raw material selection based on reduced environmental impact. These tools allow the company to address a major impact area- the use of solvents-by selecting those with better environmental profiles and simultaneously reducing waste. In addition to these efforts, AstraZeneca has a comprehensive climate change strategy in place that highlights manufacturing, building design, and transport. Although AstraZeneca addresses its most important impact areas, including green chemistry and the need for increased manufacturing efficiencies, areas of improvement include setting reduction targets for energy, waste, and water and eliminating polyvinyl chloride from its packaging.
Biotechnology Involvement:
AstraZeneca utilizes both mammalian cells as well as genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the development of its biopharmaceuticals. While the European Union Directive on Contained Use of Genetically Modified Organisms doesn't require inactivation of material classified in the lowest risk category (level 1), the United Kingdom has a higher standard and requires inactivation at all risk classes, including Risk Class 1. AstraZeneca inactivates all GMOs; however, the company requested an exception by UK regulators for some Risk Class 1 waste involving mammalian or insect cell lines that cannot survive outside a specific laboratory environment. The company's practice meets Portfolio 21's Biotechnology Policy.
