Air Liquide

France

Air Liquide produces and distributes industrial gases, medical gases and associated equipment. Two of the company's core services are associated with the provision of oxygen and hydrogen. These gases are used for a variety of purposes, including numerous applications with environmental benefits. For example, oxygen can be used to assist the combustion process in industrial applications, thereby increasing efficiency and reducing emissions. Hydrogen can be used to remove sulfur from fuels, resulting in cleaner fuels and a cleaner environment. Other applications of industrial gases include the use of ozone (rather than chlorine) in the paper pulp bleaching process, or the use of oxygen to improve the performance of lead-free solder. Over half of the company's research and development budget is linked to projects focused on saving energy, cleaner production, and implementing new energy sources (such as fuel cells). Air Liquide reports good environmental metrics, but we suggest the company provide a comprehensive environmental report. The company is beginning to obtain ISO 14001 certifications at several plants; however, as a large consumer of electricity, Air Liquide is encouraged to set goals for reducing its consumption of electricity and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
