ABB
Switzerland
ABB provides power and automation technologies that enable a wide range of industry customers, including utilities, to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. ABB is the world's largest supplier of the electrical heart of wind turbines. The company has a global market share of over 20% for generators and over 30% for low and medium voltage equipment. Through its integrated solutions for control, plant optimization, and specific industry applications, ABB also serves the oil and gas sector. Given the breadth of ABB's customer base, it is not surprising the company is involved in infrastructure projects, including those with high environmental impacts. In response, ABB has integrated group-wide sustainability criteria into its risk assessment process for projects. Life-cycle analysis studies are required for each new product and project. Environmental product declarations are also produced for ABB's major product lines. Consequently, ABB reduces the use of high risk substances and avoids further environmental risks. ABB is in compliance with Europe's legislation on hazardous substances and e-waste, RoHS and WEEE; however, Portfolio 21 has asked the company to expand its RoHS program beyond the European Union and to implement global product take-back programs.
Human rights concern
ABB provides equipment for the transmission of power from the Merowe dam to the capital of Sudan, Khartoum. As a result of the company's activities, ABB had previously been categorized by the Sudan Divestment Task Force (SDTF) as a "highest offender." However, SDTF removed ABB from its highest offender list after the company met with Sudanese authorities to formally express concern over violent incidents that occurred in the Merowe Dam area in 2006. ABB has also made several attempts to offer training and support to the dam's government-run implementation body regarding the issue of resettlement of local populations displaced by the dam's construction. Additionally, ABB is involved in the United Nations Global Compact Sudan Network. Portfolio 21 believes ABB's actions are in line with our Globalization, Human Rights and Social Justice policy.
