Community banks and loan funds often provide financing support in economically disadvantaged communities that are underserved by conventional lending institutions. Loans are provided on a scale, at a cost, and with technical support that is not usually available from more conventional sources. Portfolio 21's community investments include Permaculture Credit Union in Santa Fe, New Mexico and ShoreBank Pacific in Washington State.
Permaculture Credit Union is a nonprofit financial cooperative solely owned by its individual members. Loans often support sustainability projects like home energy efficiency upgrades, renewable energy, permaculture landscaping, water catchment and delivery, and fuel efficient automobiles.
ShoreBank Pacific is the first commercial bank in the United States with a commitment to environmental sustainability. The lending programs support individual and community efforts to bring together conservation and economic development. Loans are designed to support energy efficiency, reduction of waste and pollution, and conservation of natural resources.
